Our philanthropic approach

It stems directly from the values of our Founders, Don Felipe Segarra and Doña Amelia Boerman. As a Foundation, we are committed to acting with honesty and integrity in accordance with the highest practices, treating everyone fairly and respectfully. We are committed to complying with all the objectives set by our founders, effectively using our resources for the well-being of Puerto Rican society.

Philanthropy is known to be a distinctive field, with unique challenges and opportunities. Our founders approached philanthropy with a humanistic philosophy based on determination, a belief in the ability of individuals and institutions to do good, and a belief in the importance of healthy institutions as a means of doing so.

We use trust-based philanthropy to listen and collaborate, prioritizing relationships with grantee partners. Our accountability process is based on collaboration rather than on bureaucracy which frees both us and grantee partners from unnecessary processes that are not consistent with our vision and mission.

We pursue our goals by complying with the following values and principles:

• Through our collaborations with organizations around the island we seek to achieve a significant and socially beneficial change for the country.

• We are committed to transparency and mutual learning through open roundtables.

• We are committed to working, both internally and externally, in a collaborative manner prioritizing respect.

• We approach problems in a pragmatic and non-partisan way to achieve change and get closer to solving them.

• Grantee partners and other colleagues are our allies in solving problems for the country.

• We promote the values and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workforce, our culture, and in our grant making process.

• We approach our role in philanthropy and our responsibilities to society with humility and respect for others.

• Our operations are possible thanks to an excellent work team, who are given autonomy and whose work is accomplished cooperatively between the board and the staff.
